The snake
A man who is afraid of snakes was told this sentence on his way home. Back in his apartment, this man dare not step in the kitchen. After days of torture, he blocks the kitchen door and pretends it part of a wall. In the end, he walks out of the house, passing the snake-message on to someone else.
Interview with director Yann cheung
My name is Yann Cheung (zhang yan) I love film, I have been working in film sound for 18 years and I started directing films in 2022.
What is the story behind your film?
One day, I saw a person whisper something to another person in the subway station. The other person expressed shock, and then the person went to whisper to someone else. It occurred to me that this might be a form of rumor spreading. then I came up with the idea of making a short film about the absurdity of language and the panic caused by the transition lockdown of covid-19.
What should people take away, gain, realize after watching your film?
The insistence on freedom, the stopping of gossip, there is a Chinese proverb - gossip stops at the wise man.
Do you think that films can change people for the better or for the worse?
I certainly hope to bring some food for thought, especially in these difficult years. So I think it will be change people better.
How was the creation of your project at the time of COVID-19?
Oh that's tough to say, it's tough to get into any venue, the effects of the Covid-19 are especially strong in my country, but I did introduce some actions related to the film, which is a good thing in disguise.
What creation style did you use in the production of your project? What cameraman elements did you use?
Choosing a normal realistic space, with no or little interference with the structure, appearance and light of the space, using only the composition (including the choice of the performance area) and the choice of light to create dramatic situations—Answered by DP --Chu kewei
How did you select the actors for your project?
When I was working on the script, I had the corresponding image of my friends in my mind, and I went to ask them if they would be willing to act, and if they were not available, I went to ask other friends.
Why do you think your film should appeal to distributors?
Because this debut film is very sincere and unskilled.
At which festival has your film been screened?
Not yet.
How did your acquaintances react when they first saw the film?
Polarization phenomenon is very serious, some watch feel very like, and some watch the end said do not understand.
If you could change something in your film, what would it be?
None, it's complete, there is beauty in imperfection
Which movies are your favorites and why?
What I can think of at the moment is Tarkowski's 《Mirror》, because it's like a poem, like a dream.
What topics do you like to address in your stories?
Human rights;minority group; environmental protection; love.
What is your motivation in making films?
I think I have that very active internal monologue.
Which contemporary filmmakers motivate you the most?
Abbas Kiarostami , he broadened the boundaries of cinema
What projects do you plan to shoot in the future?
Something with an experimental style, a minimalist style, or an art gallery film.
